An E-cigarette also called a vaporizer cigarette or an electronic cigarette, is a battery-operated gadget designed to hold and emit vaporized nicotine that is inhaled by the user. Some users can also use flavored vaporized solutions that do not have nicotine. They are used as an alternative for smokers of tobacco who wish to avoid inhalation of smoke. Smoke from tobacco contains more than four thousand chemicals, most of which are harmful to humans. Many users of e-zigarette starterset report getting a similar sensation to the one of smoking tobacco, but without the smoke.
The devices are shaped like a long tube resembling a cigarette, pipe or cigar. Others look like biros (ballpoint pens). Most are reusable and feature refillable or replaceable cartridges. However, a few can be thrown away after use (disposable).
Electronic cigarettes first came on the market in China in the year 2004.The previous year, Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist had invented the e-cigarette device. From 2005, Lik’s company- Golden Dragon Holdings- began exporting into the international market. The company would later be renamed Ruyan.
Most modern day models operate automatically. When the user starts sucking on the e-cigarette, there is a sensor that activates the element that heats up and vaporizes the liquefied solution in the mouthpiece. The user can choose either a nicotine or non-nicotine flavored solution. Older models featured a manual button to turn on and off the heating element. A light emitting diode (LED)signals whether the gadget is activated as the user starts to inhale.
The device features several components including the mouthpiece, heating element, rechargeable battery and several electronic circuits.
The mouthpiece – Also called the cartridge, is attached to the end of the tube structure. There is a little plastic cup in the mouthpiece that has an absorbent material soaked in the liquid solution. This solution can hold different nicotine levels. The cartridge can be refillable or replaceable with another pre-filled one when the liquid solution is finished. Other than using the cartridge, users can also get drip tips. This is where the absorbent material is removed, and the e-liquid drops put into the bridge of the atomizer.
The e-cigarette solution- (also called e-juice or e-liquid) normally contains many flavors. For users who desire nicotine, the solution comprises of nicotine dissolved in common and safe food additives such as propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin. The nicotine content varies from zero to up to 36milligrams per milliliter (extra high). Some of the flavors, like those combining menthol and tobacco, are designed to resemble normal cigarettes.
The Atomizer – This is the heating element. It makes the liquid heat up and vaporize, enabling it to be inhaled (breathed in).Atomizers need periodic replacement, typically after 3 to 6 months of use.
The battery and electronic components – Mostly a rechargeable lithium-ion battery is used. The battery is used to power up the heating element. The life of the battery is dependent on its type, usage, size and operating conditions. It is normally the biggest component of the device.
There are newer models of e-cigarettes which have an automatic sensor that activates heating element the moment the user begins to suck on the device while other models need the user to press a button when they suck. Most models are equipped with light emitting diodes to signal device activation.
